Have you ever been to a dinner party or out with friends and everyone seems to know more than you about fine drinking? I’ve been there, and it’s one of those situations that you’d rather have something to say. When it comes to wine, a little knowledge can go a long way. Most of the people you talk to can’t distinguish a Cabernet from a Merlot or a Chardonnay from a Riesling, but always talk as if they can.¬†Plus, with the ladies, knowledge of just about anything in the “finer” categories of life can possibly land you some pretty nice action.

Wine is not as daunting as it seems. Below we will show you some of the most common types of wine so that you are “in-the-know” during your next event. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but will definitely get you started. Before we get into that however, it’s probably beneficial for you to brush up on the basics of the drink first.

About Wine

Wine is essentially an alcoholic drink made out of fermented grape juice. It’s made by crushing up the grapes and fermenting them by using yeast to break down the sugars and carbohydrates into ethanol (the alcohol part). Each of the major types of wine (Merlot, Carbernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, etc.) is made from different varieties of grapes.

Wine comes in two major categories Рwhite and red, with some in between such as Rose. Below is a good example of the differing grapes. On the left is the Merlot grape (red) and on the right is the Chardonnay grape (white).

After the fermenting process is complete, the wines are placed into barrels, which will age them and give them flavor as they absorb aromas from the wood they are stored in. This process is also specific, and each type of wood is specifically tailored to the type of wine.

Ever since it’s inception, wine has become a drink associated with fine dining, collecting, and an overall sense of higher-class. Naturally then, we need to know something about it.

On the next page we will go over the different types of red wine you can expect to see on a daily basisContinue
