All protein supplements are safe to ingest

As with most nutritional supplements, protein shakes, powders, and pills are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without proper testing and regulation, these supplements can easily contain a number of harmful ingredients that can lead to illness later on.

As an example, a sampling of Muscle Milk, which is a popular protein shake, yielded readings of 5.5 micrograms of cadmium (5 micrograms safe limit) and 13.5 micrograms of lead (10 micrograms safe limit). Harmful chemicals such as these could potentially lead to serious complications down the line.

Now, how these supplements should be used

First and foremost, protein supplements should be used sparingly and not necessarily every day or with every workout. As stated before, too much protein in a person’s diet can have negative health consequences.┬áDuring heavy weight training and days when you don’t get enough to eat, these supplements may help you build or maintain muscle; however, for the average person, eating normally is usually enough. Therefore, limit your intake, and always read the label to ensure how much you’re taking.

Lastly, do your homework. Rather than simply consuming anything recommended for you, find out what’s actually in it and why you need it. This will help you avoid serious health issues and make you a more informed person.
