Let’s face it, nobody wants to be the loud and obnoxious guy in the room grunting along as he eats his filet mignon. We’ve all seen it, and some of us have perhaps been that guy without necessarily knowing it. It crimps our style and doesn’t likely get us anywhere with the ladies either.

Apart from the obvious etiquette considerations (i.e. farting and burping), there are also a few others that you may want to consider the next time you hit the town for a good culinary time.

Understand the table

Upper-scale dining establishments will often have multiple sets of utensils that are to be used throughout the meal. Generally speaking, you will have your forks on the left side, spoons and knives on your right, and perhaps a spoon above your center plate. A good rule to follow here is to work outside in, using the cutlery furthest away from your plate for your first course, etc. and finishing up with the utensils on top for dessert. Additionally, the plates that are at your table when you first arrive are generally either not to be used or to be used only for bread before the meal.

For your drink, expect wine glasses to already be at the table when you arrive and to be taken away promptly if you do not order wine. It’s a good idea not to use these glasses for anything before you order drinks.

Posture yourself appropriately

While dining at a nicer place, always remember your manners and be on your better behavior. This includes sitting up straight in your chair, keeping your elbows off the table, placing your napkin in your lap, and eating respectfully.

As with anything else, you also want to display a positive and confident attitude, which will make your dinner guests feel more at ease and will allow for a better time. Eat your food gently rather than scarfing it down, enjoy every bite, and keep eye contact with your guests whenever possible.
